Verse: James 1:23-25
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For,
“All people are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is the word that was preached to you.

Devotion
When I first read this, I felt like it was kind of bleak, with a life is short, dust in the wind vibe. But then, when life feels long and the season is stretching out, it’s rather a comfort to think that really, this too shall pass, and there will be a new season. And the promise that although this life here on Earth, in these bodies, may pass quickly, we have been given the promise of more.

The word of God has been preached to us. And somehow, this Word, living and breathing, has made us also imperishable. Jesus is the Word. He, should we believe in him, makes us like him. This is so incredible, and really hard for me to wrap my head around. But I believe it. And it’s doing me good to try and meditate on this. To lift my gaze beyond the season that is stretching out in front of me with uncertainty and frustration.

We are really all waiting for a change here, right? The end of a pandemic, and a return to the things we used to take for granted? It will come. It may be a while. But in the meantime, there is new life breathed into us, new mercies for each day, and a God who knows the outcome, and holds us in the palm of his hand. He has made us new. And made us imperishable. I’m going to sit back and dwell on that for a while.

Prayer
Our always good God, how we need you. We need fresh life and energy to face our days that sometimes stretch out in monotony. Give us eyes to see the joys and opportunities that you are holding out to us. Thank you for your Word, which ensures, as nothing else in this world will.
