Verse: Ephesians 2:21-22
21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

What are you built on?

Growing up, my Dad was in the business of construction. He and my late Grandfather, built custom homes and buildings. We are talking multi-million dollar homes. The ones with all the bells and whistles. Sometimes, I would visit my Dad on site. I loved it! I loved seeing the progress. Dad would take a break and show us around. We would walk on the concrete foundation looking at wires, studs, holes for the pipes, etc.,it was honestly fascinating. You had to learn to visualize the building and try to imagine what it would look at the end. How could something this bare end up being a home people would live in?

It was amazing to see a structure being built literally from the ground up. It would go from concrete and studs to a gorgeous building. Of course, this process didn’t happen overnight. My Dad is one of the hardest workers I have ever known. He once told me, “If you told someone you would be able to build something for them, you can’t go back later and say it can’t happen. You figure out a way to make it happen. That’s just good business.” Basically, there wasn’t a “No” in his vocabulary when it came to making the customer happy. He was going to get the job done and get it done well.

As he walked us around the bones of these buildings we could’t see the end result. Our eyes weren’t trained like his. We would ask things like, “Where would the bathroom be?” Or smaller details like, “How in the world was he going to make a custom walk-in closet to their very detailed specifications?” It didn’t make sense in my mind how he could begin to make those things happen!

He had all the answers to our questions, because he was part of the process from the very beginning. When it was just a piece of land, he could walk on that land and be confident that at the end of this project, there would be a building just as the architect had designed it. But, there was LOTS of hard, strenuous work to be done before this structure would come close to beautiful.

God is so kind. He knew as an adult this would resonate with me and how I see my faith and growth in Jesus. These verses in Ephesians 2:21-22 say, “In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

What is my relationship with Jesus built on? Have I allowed some rooms to be left unattended? Have I kept some rooms in their bare bones state? Or have I “joined” with Him? Have I let Him come in and build the rooms of my heart to echo his love and purpose? Is my heart pure and righteous? A room where the Holy Spirit can grow and dwell?

Together, let’s ask the Lord today, “What places in this “ building” have I avoided?”, “Where do you want to come and dwell?” He is so faithful. So kind. So loving. He just wants to make your home beautiful.
