Verse: 1 John 1:8-10
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Thoughts
This is a promise. This is truth. Read it again and let it sink in: ” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. ”

I memorized this verse at a young age, and still repeat it to myself on a regular basis. When I make mistakes, when I sin, when I hurt others, when I disobey God’s leading in my life—I can tend towards beating myself up. Does that ever happen to you?

Do you ever feel like you aren’t worthy of God’s love or call on your life? Do you ever feel like a failure—like you’ve messed up one too many times for God to love or use you?

This verse settles it.  Whenever you struggle with those thoughts and feelings, tell yourself this verse. Tell the Enemy this verse! You are forgiven! If you come to him and ask his forgiveness HE IS FAITHFUL, which means he WILL DO IT! He isn’t like humans who forget, or get irritated, or decide to cancel you—he is faithful.

He will forgive AND purify you. So powerful. No only does he forgive you, but his Spirit will cleanse and purify you of the after effects of sin. He will cleanse you of shame, guilt, and the thoughts and junk that get “into your system” when you sin and walk off of God’s path. He cleanses you. Doesn’t that sound good?

If that is what you need today, look to him. Tell yourself this verse. Choose to believe it. And put it into action. His forgiveness and cleansing is a free gift. You can’t earn it, you can only receive it. So go to him in prayer, confess your sins, and receive this amazing promise.

Prayer
God, you know better than me the ways that I sin against you and others. I ask your forgiveness. I pray that you would cleanse me of my shame and guilt. Help me to walk in your way God!
