Verse:  Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Devotion
What do you hunger for?  What do you desire so much that you want it like a cold drink after being out in the heat for hours?  While we don’t hunger or thirst very often in our culture, we understand the words.  Instead of food, we may hunger for power, success, comfort, happiness.  But do we hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Righteousness is not a word we use a lot.  Righteousness literally means to be right, acting in accord with divine or moral law.  The people that heard Jesus say this were Jews who believed that they needed to obey all the moral laws of the time.  You could only be righteous if you kept every law, which was very hard to do.  That was the only way to be in a right relationship with God.

Jesus said that those you really wanted to be righteous would be satisfied.  He knew that we could not get there on our own but that he could be our way to righteousness.  He knew that his death would pay the cost of our unrighteousness and would bring those that believe in Him into a right relationship with God.

But we have to want it.  Our hunger for Jesus has to exceed our hunger for success or happiness.  When we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, our sins are forgiven and we are immediately placed in a right relationship with God.

The question that we need to ask ourselves is do we want to keep trying to be good on our own power or do we want to turn over our lives to Jesus who has the power to help us be righteous and to fill us over and over again with spiritual food and living water.  Blessed are those that turn to Jesus.

Prayer
Lord, help us to look to you for all good things.  We do desire a right relationship with you.  Help us to turn to you every day to fill us with your goodness.
