Matthew 10:16-18
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
Devotion
Obviously this message from Jesus was directed to those immediate followers around him, and it did indeed prove to be prophetic. However, the persecution of Christians has continued throughout the history of the church. Growing up in America, most of us haven’t been exposed to this reality. But today’s verse is a good reminder that we are part of the global body of Christ, and across the world our brothers and sisters are still being arrested, tortured, and even martyred for their faith.
- More than 365 million Christians suffer persecution and discrimination worldwide. A few examples
- North Korea is the most dangerous place in the world for Christians. Being discovered as a follower of Jesus is effectively a death sentence.
- Thirteen Christians a day were killed for their faith in 2023, on average worldwide.
- Algeria has gone up four places on the World Watch List, with a disturbing increase in persecution. Previously, there were 47 Protestant churches in the country. Now only four remain open, and they are under intense pressure.
- 14,766 churches and Christian properties attacked worldwide.
- 295,120 Christians displaced worldwide – when war erupts and countries are destabilized, Christians are at risk.
