Verse:  John 14:6
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Series: “Things Jesus Said” in the book of John

Devotion:
Right now we are going through sayings of Jesus in the book of John. This has got to be one of the most famous. And for good reason. There is so much we could say about this, but for this morning, let’s just focus on one thought.

Remember how, before the advent of the GPS, we did this thing called “calling for directions?” If we were going somewhere new, we’d call them (on a phone with a cord attached to it nonetheless!) and ask for directions. Then we’d write them down. ON PAPER! How barbaric.

OK – I was not very good at this. I got lost, A LOT. So when GPS finally came around it was a God-send for me.

The point is, when I called for directions, the person didn’t say, “You can go any way you’d like! Just start driving and eventually you’ll end up here!” Obviously that would be ridiculous.

There are many people though, who will tell you that is how it works with spirituality and eternity. Jesus is one option, but really, as long as you are “spiritual,” or a “good person,” or just “care for others” we will all end up in heaven reunited with whoever God is.

Jesus says that this concept is blatantly false.  As ridiculous as it would be for me to just start driving and haphazardly turning onto different roads, and expecting to get somewhere – Jesus says it is equally ridiculous to think that can work with God. No, he says there is ONE way. And he gives us the directions!

He says HE is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. He is the way. The one true way. All other ways are the opposite of True: they are False. False ways. And if you and I follow them, guess what? We end up LOST.

If you are reading this and you aren’t sure what you think of Jesus, this is the invitation: to explore his claims and find how much he loves you. If you are reading this and you consider yourself a follower of Jesus, then this doesn’t end when you decide to trust him for your salvation does it? This is a lifestyle. We are invited to see Jesus’ way as the ONLY way to live life, and then spend our lives following his way with all our heart!

That’s the thought for this morning. Let’s make sure we are following the one who knows the way, so we don’t end up lost in the most important area of our lives!

Prayer
I am so grateful, Jesus, that you are the Way. Thank you for showing us the way to restore relationship with God!
