Verse: 1 John 1:5 (ESV)
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Devotion
If you are at all new to the Bible, you may not be aware that one of the consistent themes is “Darkness = Evil; Light = Good”. It’s a concept literally as old as time, when God cast Satan (Prince of Darkness) out of heaven. And if you are at all new to this devotional series, you may not be aware that I used that same opening two weeks ago when discussing Ephesians 5:8-14. I told you it was a consistent theme!

Here, John uses that theme to highlight the very nature of God. And where is John getting his information? Straight from the source! John and the other apostles heard about God directly from his own Son. Can you imagine?!

Think about some of the many things that darkness represents – loneliness, fear, deceit, death. None of these things are present where God is. We don’t ever need to be lonely – he is with us! We have nothing to fear – he has promised to protect us! We can’t deceive God – he sees into our hearts and knows our innermost thoughts and desires! But we also cannot be deceived when we are walking with him – his light reveals the truth! Death has no power over us – he has overcome it!

Prayer
God, help us to turn away from the darkness and walk in your light. Thank you that you love us, protect us, save us, and that we can trust you. Amen.
