Verse: Psalms 30:11-12
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Devotion
This psalm is titled “joy comes in the morning.” Throughout the passage David is giving thanks to God for his faithfulness and deliverance. He writes of how God has rescued him from his enemies. From this faithful account we are reminded that God doesn’t leave us in the night. We serve a God who seeks to heal us. He doesn’t leave us alone in our darkness, but He gives us the joy of the morning.

In the last 2 verses, we are given a sweet illustration of this.

11:You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness

In the time this was written, to put on sack cloth was a ritual of mourning. It was an outward expression of an inward feeling of sorrow. David is giving thanks to God because He has freed him from his rags of sorrow and has dressed him in joy. What a great reminder of the character of God! I think of a parent who lovingly clothes their toddler. The way God shows His love towards us is gentle, caring, and intentional. Then we see the expression of sorrow change into an outward expression of gladness- dancing.

12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

I think this is a powerful way to end the psalm. Having survived the night we are able to tell of God’s faithful to those around us. Verse 12 reminds us that sorrow never wins. God’s love for us will always bring the morning!

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for being my helper! Help me recall the ways you have rescued me. Please remind me of your love for me when I forget that the morning will come.
