Verse: Hebrews 13:5
God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Devotion
What an incredible promise. This is a great way to start our week off, meditating on this truth about God: he sticks with us.
As you are facing this week, what challenges await you? Do you have tests or school projects that are weighing on you? Do you have family issues that you are worried about? Do you have work meetings that routinely bring you stress?
Whatever the challenges this week holds, God is going to face them with you. No matter how hard life gets, he will never leave you. Even if you fail God, he will never forsake you. He is walking with you, one step at a time. I love this quote from Eugene Peterson’s A Long Obedience in the Same Direction:
“God sticks to his relationship. He establishes a personal relationship with us and stays with it. The central reality for Christians is the personal, unalterable, persevering commitment God makes to us. Perseverance is not the result of our determination, it is the result of God’s faithfulness. We survive in the way of faith not because we have extraordinary stamina but because God is righteous, because God sticks with us.”
When I think about my relationship with God, to be honest, I tend to think about my efforts to stick with God. This quote turns that upside down. I love the picture of “the central reality” of our relationship not being about me sticking with him, but about him sticking with me.
He’s like a friend who never gives up on you, who is always there for you, who never lets you down, who always believes in you, and who always has your back.
I wonder this morning if you need to know God like that? Take a moment, before you face your week, and invite God to reveal himself to you this week, as the God who sticks with you.
Prayer
Thank you for your faithfulness, Jesus. I am so grateful that you never leave me or forsake me. Help me to truly know how committed you are to me.
