Verse: 1 Corinthians 12:21-26
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
Devotion
Unity is tough for a lot of systems, but not for the body. The body was made to be a unit working in sync with each part. It is no wonder that Paul used the body as an example of how the church should work together.
The people in the church are as diverse as can be. They aren’t super humans able to look past every difference among them and be perfectly unified. But by the power of the Holy Spirit moving them they are able to love beyond their normal capabilities and show compassion to one another.
Here Paul is pushing us to go even further than to just care for one another. He is calling us to bring honor to each member by being compassionate and concerned. Living life together with an outlook that we suffer and/or rejoice in each other’s pain and/or accomplishments. Let the Lord lead you to love in to a new place where you show His love to your brothers and sisters in profound ways that say “We are a body together and you’re an important part of it“
Prayer
Lord, soften our hearts toward one another to esteem each other in new ways and give away your love abundantly. Remind us that we work together in our sufferings and success. And please give us courage to go beyond our normal selves and tap into the goodness of unity. In your name, Amen
