Verse: Matthew 5:17-20
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Devotion
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is what we’ve all been waiting for!!!!”
When I read this paragraph, for some reason this voice popped in my head like an announcer at a big fight. Jesus is standing in front of Jews who have been waiting for the fulfillment of so many prophecies. They’ve been waiting and praying. They’ve passed this down from generation to generation. From Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob and down through Moses and David and the prophets. And Jesus stands up and says, “all that was written is about me!”
He is the fulfillment. He is the culmination. He is what they’ve all been waiting for!
You and I, when we read this, we can’t have that same understanding that a Jewish person of his day would have. But we can understand that Jesus is everything we’ve been waiting for too. Jesus is the peace that you’ve been waiting for. He is the hope that you need. He is the meaning of life you’ve been seeking. He’s the Savior your heart knows you need. He’s the forgiver of your sins, the healer of your wounds, the deliverer from your past, the promise of your future. Jesus is what you’ve been waiting for!
This is why Paul wrote, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21).
Today take a moment to reflect on all that Jesus fulfills in your life. Let that start a moment of gratitude and worship for who he is, and what he’s done for you.
