Verse: Psalm 61:1-4
Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
2 From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the foe.
4 I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
Devotion
Star wars fans (especially of my kids’ generation) will no doubt remember the iconic battle scene between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. As the battle draws to a close Obi-Wan says, “I have the high ground!” Of course this was true both physically and metaphorically as he cautioned Anakin against trying to attack from a poor strategic position (the low ground). Anakin tried anyway and I think we all know how that ended (enter Darth Vader).
In this Psalm, David is seeking the high ground in life. He is under attack, he is feeling the weight of this world, and he is fearful and worried. And so he looks to God. I love that line, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Lead me to the high ground. To the place above my enemies where I can stand in victory even though my enemies surround me.
I wonder today if you and I need to pray that same prayer? What enemies surround you today? Is it anxiety about the future? Is it fear about today? Is it regret about the past? Whatever you are facing today, we have a choice: face the battle on our own, or seek the high ground of Jesus.
Multiple times in the New Testament Jesus is called the Rock. “Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” Lead me to Jesus, who’s power and perspective is higher than I. He will lift you higher. He will lift your vision higher. He will strengthen you, empower you, fill you peace and grace. He will enable you to stand in the day of trouble. He will never leave you. He will always stand with you.
Let this be your prayer today, “God – lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”
