Verse: I John 3:13-15
Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Devotion:
There’s a lot here about hate and murder, things from which we can easily distance ourselves. But when we take in context what John is saying, regarding the way we should express our love toward one another, we can see the need to look closer.

The strong language is meant to make a point by contrasting love and hate; likening hate to murder and love to life-giving actions. So if love is taking action in support of others, then the lack of action could be construed as hate. It’s important to examine ourselves and the way that we treat others, even in the omissions, or lack of action. How do we speak of others? And what do we for others when we notice a need? Do we allow ourselves to be drawn in when others are gossiping? It’s hard to answer that one honestly – maybe someone may come to me with a problem or in need of advice. Where does the line get blurred between slander, gossip, self-indulgence, or simple asking for help? I have a student who comes to me now and then, and asks for advice. This young person stands out because they are so careful to avoid gossip. They use no names, and always tries to be compassionate and understanding. Not many adults do this! It’s honorable and commendable. But I can guarantee that this young person’s attempt to honor the Lord gets them some trash talk from their peers.

All this to say that it’s not easy, and it doesn’t always gain us applause to truly act in love and avoid hate. But this is where we should be heading. I want to follow this example of  loving others.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us to follow your example and love well, even in the face of those who don’t want to see it. Give us courage and grace to be self aware and make changes where they are needed. Amen.
