Verse: Matthew 10:24-25
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
Devotion
It is so interesting how we can become like the ones we look up to. Be it a friend or a mentor, a parent, or even someone we spend a lot of time watching on a screen. People rub off on us – their mannerisms, often used phrases, word pronunciations, even accents. But the thing that really matters is character. We pick up the character of those we wish to emulate, and sometimes of those we simply spend a lot of time with, even if our desire is not to emulate them.
So it makes total sense that we would choose those people wisely when we are in a position to do so. It’s not all within our control, but some of it is, especially when it comes to spending time with Jesus. We can do that through worship, through prayer, through setting time aside to listen or just sit quietly with the Lord, and through reading the Bible. These pursuits really do shape us, as much as our time spent with the other people in our lives.
Just as children often reflect their parents in the things that they say and the way that they say it, we should be reflecting Jesus because we lean on him, turn to him for support and wisdom, seek him out when we are in need, talk to him about our day, and do our best to know him better. And when we see how he does it, we try to follow his example. Right? If not, whose example are we following?
Prayer
Jesus, we want to know you better, and reflect you better. Help us to choose wisely when it comes to our time and who we imitate.
