Verse: Matthew 11:2-6
“When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’ Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.'”
Devotion:
In this passage, we find John the Baptist, a man who devoted his life to preparing the way for Jesus, now in a moment of doubt. Imprisoned and facing uncertainty, he sends his disciples to ask Jesus if He is indeed the Messiah. This shows a common human experience, even from one of the most devoted followers— doubt in the face of suffering and confusion. John, who once boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God, now seeks reassurance.
Jesus’ response is profound. Instead of simply affirming His identity, or getting upset with John, He directs John’s disciples to observe the evidence of His ministry: the restoration of sight, mobility, health, and life. These miracles are not just acts of compassion; they are signs of the Kingdom of God breaking into the world. Jesus invites John to see the fulfillment of prophecies and the reality of the good news being preached to the poor.
It’s so hard, but normal to experience doubt through our lives. We will likely encounter moments of doubt, just like John’s. It might look like wrestling with questions about our faith, the circumstances we face, or the presence of suffering in the world. It is in these moments that we must remember to look for the signs of God’s work around us. Just like Jesus encouraged John, we are invited to open our eyes to the ways God is moving in our lives and in the lives of those around us. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. So, if we find a moment to be still and look around, we can see evidence of Him showing up over and over again.
Take a couple of minutes to reflect on how God has shown up in your life. What blessings have you experienced? Where have you seen transformation, healing, or hope? These moments are not just coincidences; they are reminders of God’s faithfulness and the reality of His Kingdom.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the assurance that You are indeed the Messiah, the one who brings hope and healing. In moments of doubt, help me to see the signs of Your presence and work in my life. Open my eyes to the miracles around me and remind me that Your Kingdom is active and alive. Help me to be like John, to proclaim the good news to others and walk in faith, trusting in You. Amen.
