Verse: Ephesians 1:7-8
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.
Devotion
I once went to this Korean BBQ with some friends, and they had this deal – all you can eat for one price – but there was a catch. If you ordered food and didn’t eat it, they’d charge you an extra fee. The group we were with (several of our kids) decided they wanted to order one more round of Bulgogi, so we did. When it arrived, no one was hungry. But because we didn’t want to get charged, the other dad and I doubled down and ate all the Bulgogi on our own. We did NOT feel good afterwards. For a while!
The “all you can eat” turned out to be too much for us to handle!
As we read this verse, I feel a similar theme. Paul is recounting the amazing redemption and forgiveness that God has offered to those who accept it. Paul knows this redemption first hand as well as anyone. He has known the depths of his own sin, and the heights of God’s amazing forgiveness. And I love how he describes it: God lavishes his grace on us out of the riches of his grace.
I imagine God having storehouses and storehouses of grace. So much grace for you and me that we could never know the end of it. His grace is too much for us to comprehend. His grace, like the all you can eat Bulgogi, is too much for us to handle. There is no way we can understand the profundity of God’s grace, the vastness of his forgiveness, and the limitlessness of his redemption.
I want you to hear that this morning. When you feel low, or down on yourself, or discouraged about your past; when you feel afraid, or discouraged, or daunted by your future; remember this. God’s grace is more than enough for you. More than enough. He will LAVISH the RICHES of his grace on your life. There is no shortage of grace, and he is not stingy. Therefore, you will have more than enough. More than you know what to do with!
Prayer
I pray that you would pour out your grace upon my life today. Let me know and experience the riches of your grace for me!
