HERO Day is CityLight’s inaugural Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Event.
CityLight’s vision is to seek, love, and care for people like Jesus does. Childhood cancer warriors and their families face an unimaginably difficult battle and we are committed to seeking ways to love and care for them by meeting practical needs and raising awareness in a way that shares HOPE! Join us for a day of free superhero family fun that rallies the community to come alongside children fighting cancer at Nemours Children’s Hospital!
- 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every school day in the US
- Childhood cancer is the number 1 disease killer of children and teens
- 73% of survivors have chronic health issues
- 42% of childhood cancer warriors face life-threatening side effects
- Only 8.3% of the NIH’s annual cancer budget is dedicated to pediatric cancers
- In the past 35 years, only 3 new FDA-approved drugs were specifically developed to treat children with cancer
- Survival rates across all types of childhood cancer are approximately 75%
- At HERO Day we:
- Welcomed over 50 people come to donate blood!
- Had 13 people donate hair for Children with Hair Loss (a non-profit that makes free wigs for children)!
- Made lots of cards for local childhood cancer heroes!
- Raised money for B+ Foundation!
- Witnessed Blood Bank of Delmarva’s first pediatric “Meet the Donor” event!
- Heard Mayor Clifton, of the City of Newark, read a proclamation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; which he allowed a local childhood cancer survivor to sign with him!
- Had a TON of superhero fun!
The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation provides financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer nation-wide and funds critical, cutting-edge childhood cancer research. They are the number one financial aid provider to families in the United States and exist in honor of Andrew McDonough, who battled cancer the same way he lived life – with a positive attitude!
