Verse: Philippians 4:11-13

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Thoughts

Most people I talk to think the news of the virus is going to get worse before it gets better. Most likely there will be more strict rules around gathering and such before they get lessened.  This really is an unprecedented time for us. I know I’ve never lived through anything like it.

Mandy and I were talking last night and we were asking each other, “are you nervous?” I think, even if you aren’t particularly nervous about getting sick, it is still anxiety producing to have everything that is “normal” about life change in a matter of a couple days.

The thing is, what are you going to do about it? This is something that is happening that is out of our control. Paul, in this verse, shares something that has helped him in similar situations where his circumstances were completely out of his control.

He tells us he has learned how to be content. He has suffered need and he has enjoyed plenty. And he has learned to disconnect his contentment from his external circumstances. He has learned that no matter how bad it gets, he can do it, because Jesus gives him the strength.

So that’s my encouragement to you (and me!) this morning. You. Can. Do. This.

It is sure to get worse. We may have to sacrifice. We may face loss, sadness, pain, and frustration. But we can do this. Because Jesus will give us strength. So do not despair, and do not give up. You can do this. Say it to yourself. Make this a prayer today: “I can do all things through him who gives me strength!”
