Verse: Psalm 23:6 (ESV)

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

Message Version:

Your beauty and love chase after me
    every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life. (The Message)

Devotion

The song, Goodness of God, references these final verses in Psalm 23 with the lyrics, “your goodness is running after, it’s running after me”. This passage and these lyrics create a picture of God’s goodness being like someone chasing us down to give us a gift. Calling after us, “Wait up, I have something for you!”.

It’s so easy to feel like if we “get” anything from God it’s because WE chased after Him, that we prayed hard enough or did enough to earn a response from him. But this is the opposite of that. No matter whether you feel like you’re checking all the boxes with God or feel like you’re barely surviving, He is always there in all his goodness and grace. He always has been and always will be the initiator of every good thing, not us. We love him because He first loved us. He’s the one who sent His Son. Jesus is the one who came for you. He’s the one who said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”.

Let his goodness catch you today. Let his kindness fill you so you have kindness to give away. Let him be the one who gives, and you be the one who receives. There’s no shortage of his goodness today. No shortage of his love. You’re not in a place where his love can’t find you. He not only sees you and hears you, but his goodness and love are chasing you down.
