Verse: John 4:10,13-14
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

We are finished with our study of James. Great job everyone! Now we are going to spend some weeks doing a series called “Things Jesus Said.” We’ll be going through the book of John and pulling out statements of Jesus. Enjoy!

Devotion
Is your soul thirsty?

How do you know? How can you tell if your soul is thirsty? Here are some signs:

  • You are stressed on a regular basis.
  • You have a short fuse on your temper.
  • You are easily grumpy.
  • You say in your head often, “I’m done!”
  • You feel a lack of purpose.
  • You feel so busy but you still can’t get it all done.

Our soul can become parched. The Psalms say this:

O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1, NKJV)

We live in a thirsty land. Just living here makes our soul thirsty. The stress of life. The busy-ness of school and work. The pain of relationships. The disappointment of let downs. The sting of failure. The power of grief.

So much of life just sucks the Life out of our soul. Living is hard. Jesus even told us this: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV).

Jesus knows we are living in a thirsty land. He knows that just living on earth begins to wear on our soul. And he says, “come to me.” He offers us not just water for our bodies, but living water for our souls. The invitation is open to us. All we need to do is come and drink deeply of his presence, his word, and his life.  You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be thirsty.

So instead of letting life wear you down, why don’t you spend some time each day with Jesus, allowing the living waters to quench your thirst? It is the only thing that ever really can satisfy that deep longing in your soul.

Prayer
God, I am thirsty on a deep soul level. I need you. I pray that you would come with your living water and quench my thirst.
