Verse: John 5:24
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
Devotion:
This statement by Jesus is part of a 29 verse response from Jesus after the Jewish leaders were offended when Jesus said that he was God’s son, “therefore making Himself equal to God.”
Jesus says in this verse that there is a process by which we can pass from death to life and this has everything to do with who your Father is.
Jesus frequently made reference to two possible fathers and that the nature of the father was always in his children. One father has children who are born of the flesh and they produce the fruit of the flesh in their lives. They sin because they can’t help it, they do so by nature. Their problem goes deeper than what they do; it extends to what they are. Their inheritance is judgement and death . This is everyone’s initial condition, but if we hear the words of Jesus and believe in him who sent him, we can become children of the other Father.
It’s human nature to strive more and to work harder to try to enter into the promises of Father God and to walk in this new nature of righteousness. But, when Jesus was asked what a person must do to be doing the works of God, his response was this: “The work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:29)
So how do we enter into this wonderful relationship with a loving Father and into his inheritance of everlasting life? By hearing the words of Jesus and believing in Him!
Prayer:
Thank you Father for sending Jesus, and for your offer of life in Him. Help me to truly hear and believe all his words. Help me not to strive but to simply believe.
