Verse: John 19:28-30
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Series: “Things Jesus Said” in the book of John

Devotion
We are going through things Jesus said, and this has to be one of the most famous, and most powerful, things he ever said. “It is finished.” What an incredible promise to all of us!

What does this mean for you and me? He is proclaiming, as he breathes his last pre-resurrection breath, that the work of paying the penalty for our sins is finished. He died the death we should have died, so that we can live the life only he can give us: “For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.” (Romans 6:10).

His work for you is finished, and this is a promise you can hold onto when the enemy (or your own doubt) tries to convince you otherwise.

Struggling with sin? You are forgiven – that work is finished.

Feeling ashamed and dirty? You are cleansed – that work is finished.

Feeling separated from God? He is drawing you near again – that work is finished.

Feeling broken? His healing is for you – that work is finished.

Wrestling with self doubt? He has made you new – that work is finished.

Feeling lost? He has called you – that work is finished.

“It is finished.” Anytime you feel the enemy lying to you, reminding you for your sin, telling you that you aren’t good enough, or trying to convince you to give up, remember these words of Jesus. The work is done. You are loved, accepted, and brought near by the great and wonderful love of Jesus. Even your sin can’t break that. Because this isn’t about how good we are, it’s about how great he is.

That’s why you and I don’t have to hang on the cross. He did it for us, and no one else has to, because IT IS FINISHED.

Prayer
I can never thank you enough for the work you’ve done to save me from my sin. I worship you and give you my life.
