Verse: 1 Peter 2:6
“The Scriptures provide precedent,
‘Look I’m setting a stone in Zion,
a cornerstone in the place of honor.
Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation
will never have cause to regret it.’

Devotion
I have regretted some things in my life, how about you? What a relief that trusting in Jesus won’t be one of them. I really cracked myself up thinking about ending here. What if that was my whole devotion? If you trust in Jesus you won’t regret it. The end.

If you missed yesterday’s devotion, the verses before this one introduces this visual of Jesus as the Living Stone that we are building our lives on. In verse 6, Peter is quoting the book of Isaiah (written hundreds of years prior) and affirming that Jesus is the cornerstone God spoke of in this passage. Why is Jesus being the cornerstone important? A cornerstone is “a stone that forms the base of a corner of a building, joining two walls.” Another definition is, “an important quality or feature on which a particular thing depends or is based.” Our faith and our way of living as followers of Jesus, it’s all based on and depends ON Jesus.

Think about things you’ve regretted or felt embarrassed or ashamed of ever believing. Or people you’ve really believed in and looked up to and then found out their actual lives weren’t the lives they were presenting. Isn’t there some embarrassment over thinking something was true when it wasn’t? Peter is trying to assure us that this won’t be the case with Jesus. You don’t have to worry that Jesus isn’t who He said He is. It all depends on him and he is completely and utterly dependable as the cornerstone of our lives. Cue the deep breath. I listen, probably everyday right now, to the song, “You Hold it All Together”, by Maverick City Music. Go listen if you need to hear that over and over like I do.

Prayer
Jesus I want to trust in you completely. Show me what it looks like to trust you as the cornerstone and foundation of my life. Help me where I doubt or am afraid to trust you. Thank you that my trust in you will not end in regret. Thank you that as the cornerstone you hold it all together.
