Ephesians 4:11-13
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Devotion
Wow. This one feels seriously academic. But also, it’s so straightforward. Two plus two equals four.
I appreciate a simple formula. Tell me what to do, to achieve a particular result, and I will do it. What jumps out to me here, is that middle section – works of service leading to unity in faith and knowledge.

How can unity in faith in the Son and unity in knowledge of the Son be accomplished by way of service? Frankly, I don’t know.

But. Think about this. Have you ever participated in a service project along side of others? There is something that happens when you work with other individuals toward a common goal. There IS unity. It’s palpable.

It could be something as simple as getting together to help a friend move, or a larger organized effort of volunteering. But something happens there. When we serve together, we see one another differently then when we see each other in passing at church, or work, or wherever.

And through this process of service leading to unity, we are brought closer to the goal of maturity in Christ. That’s what the verses say! And this, to me, seems like what it’s all about.

We do our part and use our gifts, and that helps the body of Christ (the Church) to become equipped for service. We participate in acts of service, and become unified, and thereby grow in maturity. Sounds like a recipe for success to me. I hope this encourages you to dig in and serve; it sure lights a fire under me!

Prayer
God, our Father, you know what we need. Not only our physical needs, but our needs for growth, maturity, and community. Help us to hear your words and apply them, so that we can see the results that you desire for us: unity, maturity and fullness in You!
