Verse: Ephesians 1:1-2
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

Devotion
When I look at this verse I really dig into what does it mean to be alive in Christ? Before being alive in Christ, it says we were dead in our transgressions and sin. Obviously this doesn’t mean physically dead since we are living, breathing human beings. However, without Christ we can’t be spiritually alive. What does that mean for us? When we accept God’s grace and forgiveness, we are made alive and new in Christ. We can shed that old self that is dead by walking in and accepting his grace. We can’t do this alone, that is the point. We can’t become fully alive without Jesus.

The second verse just reinforces the age old problem of going along with the world or culture. There is sin, rebellion, and evil in the world. This problem has been around for thousands of years and is just as prevalent today, and for sure more visible. There is going to be temptation to follow the ways of the world. In Matthew, Jesus tells us the gate is broad that leads to destruction, meaning it’s easy to find and walk on. And instead instructs us to enter the narrow gate that leads to life. We have a God that loves us, cares for us, and leads us to true life. And when we make mistakes or disobey, He never leaves, but continues to bring us back to himself. Let’s grab onto that very gift of his love and forgiveness that he gives us freely. All we have to do is ask. We’re going to sin and struggle, however when we are alive in Christ we get everything that is afforded us as his children. His grace, wisdom, strength, courage, and his unconditional love.

Prayer
Thank you for everything that you do for us. Thank you that we don’t have to walk out this life alone. Thank you Jesus for making us alive in you. We ask that we would continue to renew our mind and point our hearts towards you and your words.
