Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Devotion
My Eagle Scout husband always hikes with a trail map and makes sure we are well prepared. Once we were hiking at a very large state park when we ran into some hikers who asked us for directions. They were headed in the opposite direction of the trailhead and didn’t even realize how lost they were. It was getting late in the day and if they had kept following the trail they would have been stuck in the woods for the night. They followed us until we could direct them to the right path back to the parking lot.

We now bring our four children with us when we hike. Since our kids are still pretty young we need to watch the trail carefully and make sure that they are following the marked path. They are curious and clueless, attracting danger everywhere we go. They like to race ahead and wear themselves out before we get to the challenging part of the trail. Inevitably we are carrying multiple children by the end.

Our kids trust us to guide them. When they are unsure they will reach up a little hand for us to hold. The lost hikers trusted us because we had the map to guide them back to safety.

The culture we live in tells us to make our own way, live our own truth and follow our hearts. What if we had told the hikers to just “follow their hearts”? What if we let our kids explore their “own truth” on the trail?

Ok, so a hiking trail and life aren’t exactly the same right? Actually life is A LOT more complicated, confusing and dangerous!

The book of Proverbs is all about seeking wisdom which come from God. A map for life if you will. He is the source of all wisdom. He can guide you with every choice and challenge. Let’s trust Him with every mountain and valley, bend and fork in the trail. Let’s submit to Him where we have said no or decided to go it alone. He is trustworthy, He is good and He will make your path straight!

Prayer
Jesus we give you every fearful and anxious thought. We reach up our hands to you because you have promised to guide us and carry us. Show us where we are looking to our own understanding for guidance or peace. We submit to you because we know you are loving, powerful and good! Amen
