Verses: 1 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:17-20‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us. For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.”

‭‭Devotion:
These four verses note how Paul wanted to visit the Thessalonians. He had invested so much into the church that they became like his family. You can tell that by the way he noted that he was torn from them, but not torn away in their hearts. Paul intentionally notes that he had never forgotten about the church he started, and all that attended. This resonates a lot, especially considering what life has been like in the past year. It can be easy to assume that people in our lives have “forgotten” about us, but it is likely that there are other things at play. More than likely, that person is waging a war of their own causing them to seem distant. However, that person likely has continued caring from where they are.

Paul goes on to note specifically that Satan prevented him from visiting the church. Spiritual warfare is real, and something that is often at play. It can be easy to fall into the idea that as a Christian, everything just works itself out and everything ends up being great. While I wish this was true, it unfortunately it is a common misconception. The Bible is full of examples of situations where things did not work out the way the person planned (Job, etc.).

In reality, God’s plan will always be infinitely greater than anything we could come up with. And that often means things can be difficult, challenging, and taxing. However, like Paul never forgot about the Thessalonians, God never leaves our side. Through all situations, the Holy Spirit is right by our side to share that burden. If we were meant to handle everything on our own, we wouldn’t have a need to rely on God. I challenge you to reach out to whoever may have come to mind, and just check in with them. Ask them how they’re doing, what they have going on, and how you can walk with them through whatever is going on.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
I ask for the strength and wisdom to push through whatever obstacles we may currently be encountering— no matter how “trivial” it may seem. Please continue to help us rely on you through those situations, and help us to always turn back to you in everything we do. Please help us to continue to glorify you in all that we do. Amen.
