Verse: Hebrews 1:8-12
8 But about the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
10 He also says,
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.”
Thoughts
Does it ever feel like the world (or your world) is spinning out of control? Does it ever feel like evil is winning? Do you ever look around and feel discouraged about the state of the world, or the state of your life?
Today’s verses offer a giant encouragement for all of us: God is still on his throne.
His throne will “last forever” and his years will “never end.” Wars will come and go, evil will rise and fall, earthly kingdoms will appear and then disappear into the annals of history…but God will still be on his throne.
The evil and pain we see today breaks God’s heart like it does ours. But his perspective is different. He reigns not just right now, but forever. He laid the foundations of the earth, and even those “will perish” but he will not. And we know of him that he loves righteousness and hates wickedness.
Sometimes we can despair about evil in the world, and feel that God somehow is being unfair or unjust. The encouragement we find in the Bible, though, is that God will make all things right. We might want him to do it right now, but he is working in his timing. He is on his throne, and he will end all evil.
This is why Jesus told us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.””
And on top of that, he has commissioned his church to be the salt and light of the world. We are called to bring his love and help to those to whom evil is done. We are called to “act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8).
Today, take a moment to thank God for the fact that he still sits on his throne. And invite him to show you the ways in which you can be a difference maker now — and bring some of heaven to earth through what you do!
Prayer
God, when I feel discouraged and defeated I pray that you would remind me that you are on the throne. I pray that you would remind me that you will make all things right in your time.
