Verse: Hebrews 2:1-4
We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Devotion
I think this is one of those verses we should spend some time meditating on and rolling over in our head several times. Let’s take it apart and really think about it this morning.

We must pay careful attention.
This is obviously imperative to the writer of Hebrews. We must. It is important and vital to our faith and our lives. Pay careful attention. Does this describe my faith? Does it describe yours? How seriously am I taking my discipleship with Jesus? He goes on to say that this salvation message was first taught by Jesus, then confirmed by witnesses, signs, wonders, miracles, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is a message far greater than any other message ever spoken. And he wants to encourage us to not take it for granted, not make it “part of our lives,” and not ignore it or forget it. No, we are to pay careful attention. We MUST!!! For it is the wellspring of life for us and those around us.

To what we have heard.
We must pay careful attention to the message we have heard. The Gospel! And the Word of God! The Bible tells us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17, NKJV). We must pay careful attention to the Word of God. Are we? Am I? Can you say that you carefully read the Word, looking for his Truth and his message, and how it should apply to your life? Are you living your life and making your decisions by carefully paying attention to what the Word says?

So that we do not drift away.
This is a real fear for all of us. There are so many ways that we can be pulled away from the center of Jesus. It is like Jesus is our anchor, but if we aren’t tethered to him, the currents of this world will cause us to drift away. Let that not be true of our faith! We can be people who are steadfast, faithful, and persevering in faith. Who never give up in doing good works. Who run hard after Jesus like a runner in a race. So how do we not drift away? We pay careful attention to the Word.

Today take a moment to consider this passage and allow the Holy Spirit to speak into your life any places where we need to pay more careful attention!

Prayer
Share with me Holy Spirit how I can follow you more closely. Open your word to me and speak to me. Give me your paths to walk on Lord.
