Verse: Romans 12:12
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Devotion
As we continue our theme of patience, we come to a verse dealing with having patience in the midst of personal turmoil. We all know from our own experiences that life isn’t easy, and oftentimes, isn’t fair. Some seem to skate by, without a care in the world, while others seem to never be able to catch a break. Paul’s use here of the word tribulation (a state of great trouble or suffering) indicates his understanding of that reality. And this concept is reinforced elsewhere in Scripture, as we are often reminded that the life of a Christian will not be without hardships.

So, how are we to be patient in such circumstances? Let’s start by not ignoring the rest of the verse, because Paul didn’t choose his words randomly. In fact, this verse is a small part of a larger blueprint for the Christian life that Paul is laying out in Romans 12. We start by cultivating an attitude of joy in all circumstances, which we can do as a result of the hope we have in Christ. Then, when trials come, we are already starting from a positive frame of mind, and we are easily reminded that nothing we face in this life is permanent, nor does it compare in scope to what the future holds for us. Likewise, if we maintain an open line of communication with the one who is sovereign over all things, not only will we be comforted and strengthened to endure our afflictions, but our hope (and thus our joy) will constantly be renewed, so we are prepared for the next round of hardship.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for the hope we have in Jesus, and the joy it brings. Remind us to remain in constant communication with you, so that our hope may be renewed, and we can be prepared to face the trials we know will come. Amen.
