Verse: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when He was betrayed took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also He took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Devotion:
If you’ve spent time in church, this is likely a verse you’ve heard before. This is recited as we take communion. The intention of this is for communion to bring unity to believers. It’s a visible display of our belief in His Redemptive power, which we have access to through His sacrifice on the cross. This is a way for us to celebrate and proclaim the Gospel through expression, as He instructs that as we partake in the action we are proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes. In later verses, it will discuss some of the things that are important to consider when deciding whether or not to partake in the act of communion. Before we get there, I encourage you just to be still and meditate on these verses. When we partake in communion, we are acknowledging that Jesus was betrayed and broken, willingly died for us, and rose again to offer us a new covenant with Him. We can’t take communion without first taking a moment to sit in the seriousness of the act of the cross. Today, I encourage you just to take time to sit with thoughts of the cross. Let the magnitude of His love and mercy wash over you in a new way. Be reminded of all that He endured, for each and every one of us.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the moments you put in front of me to remind me to slow down. I’m sorry that sometimes I move through the pace of life so quickly that I don’t reflect and appreciate all that you e done for me daily. Please quiet my thoughts and just allow me to be still with You. Remind me of the amazing, brutal, heartbreaking, selfless act that You endured for me on the cross. Help me not to lose sight of the real purpose for engaging in communion. Remind my heart of this moment of stillness when I allow myself to feel the magnitude of the weight of the cross. Thank you Lord. Amen
