Verse: 2 Timothy 2:20-21
20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

Devotion
Many of us have those items in our houses that are reserved for “special occasions”.  The ones that take up the most space and are used the least in our house are the fancy dishes that come out for holiday dinners.  It’s sad to have things that are beautiful, meant for celebrating, and yet are used so infrequently.

How many of us are like those fancy dishes?  We know God has purpose for us, but we may or may not fully feel like we’ve discovered what it is, so we stay wrapped up in the proverbial bubble wrap, so we don’t get chipped or broken.  Or maybe we do know what God’s purpose is for us, but something is holding us back from fulfilling that purpose.  Our own selfish desires or fear keep us from taking the steps towards what God has for us.  Sometimes it’s the expectations of this world that might be holding us back.  Our culture celebrates financial, physical, and educational achievements and makes it hard to see a life given away for others as a complete success.  Have a discussion with family or friends at your next meal and come up with a list of the most successful people you know.  See how the list lines up with people fulfilling their God given purpose or if it’s closer to some of these more ignoble purposes we so often strive for.

As Paul urged Timothy to fulfill his noble purpose, ask God to take away the things keeping you from your intended purpose.  Then ask God to give you the courage to embrace your purpose daily, not just for special occasions.
