Verse: Psalm 18:28-30
“You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.”
Devotion
What if? We play that game a lot. What if I don’t get the right job? What if my child/spouse/parent gets sick? Fill in your own what if___________. There are thousands of ways we open ourselves up to that kind of worry and fear every day. How often do we turn those thoughts upside down and ask “What if God __________?” What if God really means what He says? What if God’s promises are really for me and not just everyone else? What if God can really turn my darkness into light? What if God can really help me fight and win whatever battle I am going through?
Wouldn’t our lives be different if we played that game differently and believed the promises of God instead of chasing our own thoughts of what if? I once heard the idea to stop talking to God about your problems and start talking to your problems about God. What if we replied to our thoughts of worry and fear with promises like “with God’s help, I can scale a wall”? What if we replied to our thoughts of shame, distrust, and addiction with “God turns my darkness into light”? What if God can keep our lamp burning, even on the days of way too much to do and way too much exhaustion. What if we believed that God’s way is perfect and our own ways not so much?
Today, take just one of those “what if” thoughts and turn them over to God. Ask Him to turn those thoughts from darkness to light, from battle to victory, from kind of a mess to His perfection.
