For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—”
Devotion
Paul’s statement begins with a powerful declaration: “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Paul, who had once excelled in religious achievements and worldly success, came to a realization that nothing in this world could compare to the immeasurable value of knowing Jesus personally. All earthly achievements, possessions, and accolades faded into insignificance when held against the greatness of Christ.
Think of the things we often pursue or cling to in this world: wealth, popularity, success, or comfort. Though they may have their pleasures, they can never truly satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Only in Christ do we find true fulfillment and purpose. He alone offers eternal and unchanging worth, a treasure that never fades or loses its luster.
Paul experienced firsthand the cost of following Jesus. He endured hardships, persecution, and the abandonment of worldly comforts. Yet, he considered it all as rubbish when compared to the eternal joy of knowing Christ.
Paul’s ultimate desire was “that I may gain Christ and be found in him.” His pursuit was not for temporary gain but for an everlasting relationship with the Savior. In Christ, we discover our true identity and purpose. We are found in Him, hidden in His grace, and covered by His righteousness.
Furthermore, Paul emphasizes the essential truth that our righteousness is not attained through obedience to the law or self-righteous acts. Instead, it comes “through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” Our standing before God is not based on our own merit but on the finished work of Christ on the cross. Through faith in Jesus, we receive the gift of righteousness, becoming children of God and heirs to eternal life.
As we reflect on these verses, let us examine our hearts honestly. Are we clinging to the treasures of this world, or are we seeking the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord? Are we willing to let go of anything that hinders us from a deeper relationship with Him? Do we trust in our own righteousness, or have we surrendered to the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ?
May we, like Paul, fix our eyes on Jesus, counting everything else as loss, that we may gain Christ and be found in Him. Let us cherish the treasure of knowing Jesus, placing Him above all else, and finding our true identity and worth in Him alone.
