Verse: Psalm 146:1-2, 6-9
Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul.
I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live….
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
he remains faithful forever.
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free,
the Lord gives sight to the blind,
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,
the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the foreigner
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
The Lord reigns forever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord.
Devotion
This Psalm begins a series of 5 Psalms that all start and end with the phrase “Praise the Lord.” They are a call to all of us to praise the Lord for who he is and for what he has done. Take a moment this morning to ponder how worthy Jesus is of our praise. As you read through this Psalm notice all that the Psalmist points out that God does on our behalf (I’ve bolded the words). And then think about how you have seen him do these things in your life.
God remains faithful forever. How have you seen his faithfulness in your life? How have you seen him stay true to you, stay by your side, support you and stand with you?
God upholds the oppressed. How have you seen God uphold you when you’ve been oppressed by this world or the enemy?
God gives food to the hungry. How have you seen God provided for your basic needs?
God sets prisoners free. How have you seen him bring freedom and deliverance into your life? How have you seen him break the chains in your life?
God gives sight to the blind. How have you seen God open your eyes to see the truth about him and his love for you?
God sustains the fatherless and the widow. How have you seen him comfort you and strengthen you when you have lost those closest to you?
The list goes on, and so should we. His praises should always be on our lips. Praise the Lord for who he is and what he has done in your life today. Take time to specifically praise him, to thank him, to worship him with a full heart over all he has done for you!
