Verse: Psalm 148:13-14
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.
And he has raised up for his people a horn,
the praise of all his faithful servants,
of Israel, the people close to his heart.
Devotion
What is this horn? What does it mean that God has raised up for his people a horn? The horn in biblical imagery usually refers to victory, especially being rescued from oppression. Like a bull lifting up it’s horns after winning a battle. So this Psalm is telling us to praise the Lord because he will lift up a victory for us, he will redeem us and rescue us from oppression. In whom do we see the ultimate fulfillment of this promise?
In Jesus of course! Luke 1:68-69 is a song from John the Baptist’s father Zechariah, and he says:
“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,
And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of David His servant.”
Jesus is the long awaited “horn of salvation.” He is the victory over sin and death. He is our redemption. He is our deliverance. He makes a new way for all of us to enter into relationship with him.
Today, then, can we take a moment to pause and reflect on how Jesus has changed our lives? How has Jesus delivered you? How has he rescued you? How has he brought victory into your life?
Praise God for sending his Son through him we can find life, deliverance, and peace!
