Verse: Matthew 1: 18-21
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Devotion
I can’t help but admire Joseph for his integrity in this challenging situation. Despite difficult news, he was ready to part ways without compromising Mary’s dignity and community perception. How quickly am I to go and vent about a scenario in which I feel wronged versus taking a step back and considering the feelings of others? How might my actions worsen the relationship or outcome of the situation? News of a pregnancy is a blessing, but not one Joseph was expecting considering the circumstances of their relationship at that time.
Then, the Lord steps in with His oh so perfect plan. Joseph and Mary were given the opportunity of a lifetime and certainly one with pressure. Their son would not only be their precious baby, but one who would sacrifice Himself and offer the most amazing gift of all. I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoy carefully selecting gifts for others. Of course, I do experience excitement in receiving them, as well. As I sit and digest this gift after rereading our verses from Matthew, I am consumed with the amazing power of our Savior. Imagine the responsibility of saving people from their sins, and the way to do this is dying on a cross. This is the ultimate sacrifice. The end result and purpose is a gift that quite literally keeps on giving.
This brings me to receiving it. Sometimes it can be difficult to accept help from others and to accept their generosity whether in the form of time, money or items. God’s gift of Jesus and the saving of our sins does not come with a strict set of conditions or muddy waters. We are simply to acknowledge this blessing and get to know Jesus. When we accept this gift and begin learning more about it, we are drawn to the peace that comes with knowing we have been forgiven and will continue to be forgiven as we live our lives for Jesus.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, let us be filled with gratitude for your sacrifice that offers us everlasting life. Let us feel your peace that comes from knowing you are in control, and today’s troubles are in your hands. You have given us the opportunity to experience the joy that is found in building a relationship with you. Help us to seek you in the finer moments of this day and in the coming days. Remind us to breathe deeply as we contemplate your gift and rejoice in it.
