Devotion
I’ve been reading Psalm 71 a lot lately and I want to share three quick reflections to get your week started. Let’s start with verse 1.
In God Alone
“In you, Lord, I have taken refuge.” (vs 1)
I love this. It’s so simple. But let’s focus on where the author is finding their refuge. In YOU Lord. Not in money, or security, or friendship. Those things can be good for sure, but first and foremost we find our refuge in God alone. It’s a statement of priority. A statement of knowing who we can ultimately trust. IN YOU God I will find my hope, my strength, my purpose, and my direction. “Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go” – I love that sense of utter reliance on God. We can always go to God! “As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.” If we have God, we always have reason to hope!! With God in our corner we have all that we need.
A Sign To Many
“From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you. I have become a sign to many; you are my strong refuge.” (vs 6-7)
This verse really hit me as I’ve been reading Psalm 71. The author realizes that people are watching their life, and how they live through the hardship they are enduring. It made me wonder, how many people are watching how we live our lives? For whom have we “become a sign” to? Who is watching your faith? Who is watching how you live out your discipleship in Jesus? Who is watching how you love others and love God? This is both a challenge and an opportunity! You get to be a sign for others to follow to God!
Too Many to Tell – But I’ll Try
My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long—though I know not how to relate them all.16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, Sovereign Lord; I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone. 17 Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. (vs16-18)
I love how the author says “though I know not how to relate them all.” Are you and I aware of how good God is? Can we say with the Psalmist that even I we tried to tell of God’s saving acts all day long, we would struggle to relate them all!? How good has God been in our lives?! This challenged me to speak more often of the goodness of God in my life. To tell more people about how God has saved me, loved me, and helped me. Do you have stories to tell of Jesus? Maybe we shouldn’t be keeping them to ourselves!
OK – I know those were three random thoughts, but hopefully it gets your week started in a good direction!
