Verse: Matthew 9:29-31
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
Devotion
Take a moment and reflect on what it must have been like for those men. You may even relate in your own way. They spent their entire lives feeling stuck. These men were blind, and there was nothing that could fix that for them. I imagine they adapted to living in the darkness, growing accustomed to their struggles—probably to the point where their blindness became their identity.
But one day, they found out there might be a solution. There might be a way out of their struggles, sparking a glimmer of hope. Once they heard about Jesus, they likely traveled far to encounter Him. They had faith that Jesus could lift them from their troubles, so they sought Him out and asked to be healed.
Then, Jesus looked at them and touched their eyes. I can’t fully imagine what it must have been like to be face-to-face with Jesus, to have Him reach out, acknowledge their pain, and step into their darkness. Jesus showed these men He truly cared about what they were going through. And then He brought light to that darkness. I can’t fathom the overwhelming joy they must have felt when they opened their eyes, and the first thing they saw was Jesus. There had been no hope for them—until Jesus came on the scene and changed everything.
Jesus did sternly ask them not to tell anyone what had happened. He was on a mission and didn’t want the focus to be on His miracles, but on what He was healing within their hearts. Yet, I think Jesus knew they wouldn’t stay quiet. I bet it was written all over their faces—they were going to shout their restoration from the rooftops. Because once you experience the hope that Jesus brings to your life, there’s no turning back.
What are you facing in your life that feels hopeless? Maybe you think there will never be an answer to your pain. Bring it to Jesus with faith and see what happens. Maybe He will miraculously make things better, or maybe just knowing that Jesus is walking with you will be enough. But one thing I know for certain, from the bottom of my heart, is that Jesus makes all things better. He cares about you. He wants to touch the places in your life that feel beyond hope. Put your faith in Him, and He will reach back out to you.
